‘Amsterdam's creative spirit and openness make it a very appealing place to set up shop'
Based in Portland, Oregon, Wieden+Kennedy is a full-service, creatively driven advertising agency. Today W+K is the largest independent agency in the world. Aside from its European headquarters in Amsterdam, the agency has offices in London, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Delhi.
Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam—the agency’s first office outside the US—opened its doors in 1992. “We expanded globally to keep up with client Nike,” said Lee Newman, Managing Director of the Amsterdam office. “Amsterdam has always been an important center of commerce—a gateway to continental Europe. But more importantly, it has always been a place where creativity thrives. Amsterdam’s creative spirit and openness to new ideas make it a very appealing place to set up shop. And it didn’t hurt that Nike was building a European headquarters down the road in Hilversum.”
The Amsterdam office currently has 25 different nationalities represented among its staff, a testament to its success in recruiting talent from abroad. “Once candidates visit and experience the culture of the city, the agency usually seals the deal,” said Newman. “We all feel that Amsterdam is a wonderful place and that we’re lucky to live and work in.”
The office currently serves such notable clients as Heineken, Nokia, Coca-Cola, Nike, Electronic Arts, Delta, ESPN, BASF, Levi’s, Women Win, and EYE Film Institute Nederland.
