Growing in the digital gateway to Europe

Founded in 1998 in California, Equinix connects businesses with partners and customers around the world through a global platform of high-performance data centers to help them grow their businesses, improve application performance and protect their vital digital assets. Equinix operates in 38 strategic markets across the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific.

In 2008, Equinix entered the Dutch market by acquiring Virtu Secure Webservices, a Dutch company based in Enschede. Today, the company operates three state-of-the-art International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Amsterdam, as well as additional facilities in Zwolle and Enschede.

“We chose the Netherlands because of its central geographical location, superb infrastructure and business-friendly tax structure,” said Michiel Eielts, Managing Director of Equinix Netherlands. “In addition, the presence of AMS-IX, the largest Internet exchange in Europe, makes Amsterdam an important hub for the networks serving the continent. We are known as the gateway to Europe.”

Government support of alternative energy sources and eco-efficiency efforts has been another strategic advantage for Equinix. “We have been focused on a number of green initiatives worldwide, but we have really pushed the envelope in the Netherlands, utilizing a good percentage of our power from alternative sources such as wind,” added Eielts. “The Dutch government is helping us grow our business through its policies.”

“Amsterdam is an important location for our target customers. As an increasing number of multinational corporations are selecting the Netherlands as a base for serving the European market, the region has become a strategic market for premium data center and interconnection services,” concluded Eielts. “Demand for high specification co-location space is growing, particularly as firms struggle to justify the expense of building their own facilities. We anticipate continued growth for Equinix in the Netherlands.”
